Bharatpur — A Sanctuary of Birds

Founded by the Jat king Maharaja Suraj Mal in the 18th century, Bharatpur is home to Keoladeo National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage wetland and one of the world's great bird sanctuaries. Its old name, Lohagarh, means 'the Iron Fort'.

Bharatpur is known for the migratory birds that flock here from as far as Siberia and China, and for the formidable Lohagarh Fort that no invader ever fully conquered.
