Heritage on Rails

One of the World's Most Celebrated Luxury Trains

Launched in 1982 by Indian Railways and Rajasthan Tourism, the Palace on Wheels revived the golden age of royal rail travel — recreating the personal saloon carriages once owned by the Maharajas, Nizams and viceroys of princely India. In 2024 its readers voted it among the world's best luxury trains.

Today the train comprises 14 fully air-conditioned coaches, each named after a former princely state of Rajputana and dressed in that state's colours, crests and craftsmanship — hand-carved wood, silk furnishings, antique mirrors and plush carpeting. A week aboard is a week inside a moving palace.
