Jaisalmer — The Golden Desert Citadel

Rising from the Thar Desert like a mirage of gold, Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal — its name means 'the hill fort of Jaisal'. The honey-coloured sandstone glows at sunset, giving the Golden City its name.

Jaisalmer is known for its living fort, its intricately carved merchant havelis, and the rolling Sam Sand Dunes where camel safaris and desert evenings await.
