Best Time to Visit Rajasthan & Ride the Palace on Wheels
When the Palace on Wheels runs
The Palace on Wheels operates a single season — September to April — departing New Delhi every Wednesday. This window deliberately avoids the fierce Indian summer (May–August) and the monsoon, so every departure falls in the comfortable, sightseeing-friendly half of the year.
Month by month
September & October — warm and green
Early-season departures are warm (often 30°C+ by day) with the landscape still green after the monsoon. October is a lovely time for the lakes of Udaipur and the forts of Jaipur, with festive energy around Dussehra and Diwali.
November to February — peak season, cool and clear
These are the most popular months: warm, sunny days and cool evenings, ideal for forts, desert excursions and the Ranthambore safari. December and January mornings can be genuinely chilly in the desert, so pack a few warm layers. Visibility at the Taj Mahal is often at its best.
March & April — warming up
Late-season departures warm steadily, especially in the desert, but remain very pleasant in March. April is the last chance before the summer break, often with lower-season fares.
So when should you go?
For the best all-round weather, aim for October to March. For the coolest, clearest conditions choose December–February (and pack layers); for warmer evenings and potential value, consider September, October or April. Whichever you choose, see live fares and departures and book direct.
