What to Pack for a Luxury Train Journey Through India
The short answer
Pack light, comfortable daywear for sightseeing, one or two smart-casual outfits for dinner, and seasonal layers. Cabins are compact and well-appointed, so a soft, medium-sized bag is easier than a large hard case.
Clothing
- Breathable daywear (cottons and linens) for forts, palaces and city tours
- Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes — there are steps and uneven surfaces at the forts
- Smart-casual attire for the dining cars; there is no strict dress code, but guests enjoy dressing for dinner
- Warm layers — a jacket, shawl or light sweater — for December to February mornings and desert evenings
- Modest cover (shoulders and knees) for temples and religious sites
Essentials & extras
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat for desert and fort visits
- Any personal medication, plus a small first-aid kit
- A universal power adapter for Indian sockets (Type C/D/M) and a power bank
- A reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser and tissues
- A light daypack for excursions and your camera or phone for the photography
